Though his supersonic rise to hipster stardom might raise a few eyebrows, one has to admit that Ben Frost knows how to write heart wrenching music. "By The Throat" deserved all the praises it received, and however high the expectations might be for this "Solaris", they are met. An album written by Ben Frost and recorded during Krakow's Unsound festival under the direction of Daniel Bjarnason, it is much more of a string and drones affair than Frost's usual mixture of noise and spare beats. And again, the subtlety, honesty and execution convey sadness and melancholia like few others. Another excellent album from this musician.

Fourth volume of Counterstrike's collaborative records with the royalty of the hard drum'n'bass scene. On the menu this time is a crisp and very percussive A side co-written with Current Value, and which delivers all what we could expected from such a tune. The B side, a bit more syncopated and a bit faster, was co written with Hybris's Syd Vischi. No big surprise here, but hey, the quality is there and the dancefloor will be full, which is all we could expect from such a record.

This eighth record already on The Outside Agency's Genosha One Seven Five imprint is a whole family affair, with no less than 4 acts total, for two tracks. The A side, a collaboration between TOA, Peter Kurten and Katharsys, is the most broken of the two, full of changes and with a heavy dose of d'n'b tones thrown into this otherwise fast-paced hardcore tune. The flip, co-written with the always angry-sounding Forbidden Society, is a bit straighter but also harsher and more percussive, going straight to its crossbreed point. To conclude, another high quality material from The Outside Agency, unsurprisingly delivering the goods.

Back in stock. This Outside Agency's two tracker 10" is the first solo release on Smackdown. Featuring a track written by DJ Hidden and one by Eye-D (and artwork sides reflecting this as well), it is a resolutely hardcore, straight and ?ber-pounding affair, which is clearly aimed at the craziest of the Dutch parties, and doesn't dwelve too much in the hardcore / drum'n'bass crossbreed experimentations of their Genosha releases. Still, it's all extremely well done, very energetic, clear and humorous. So as usual with The Outside Agency, don't wait to get your hands on this.

Bong-Ra drumn'bass-ized on the one side, and hardcore-ized on the other. The man is there more in spirit than in sound in this "Hard Way", and while some of his guitar riffs or dark moods and samples make their way on this translucent red vinyl, it'd seem somewhat that Limewax and Thrasher pushed their sounds on each side of this wax. It's all hard, it's quite fast, it's Hammer-movies creepy, and people into this already know they need this record.

Slutmachine's long awaited "Doombringer" album reminds in several ways of Cdatakill's "Paradise" debut album. Like this predecessor, it is made of a breakcore-meets-industrial, dark beat driven first half and a much more atmospheric but deeper soundtrack-like second half. The nine solo tracks of the first part (coming with three remixes, by Cdatakill himself, Datura 1.0 and Dolores Dewberry) are very well executed old-school breakcore tunes, reminiscent at times of Hecate's material to which would have been semi-industrial melodies. Following them, the hour long eponymous piece is a droney, dark and twisted long piece, guaranteed to work as a solid score to hellish nightmares. All in all a very efficient and to the point album of dark, varied breakcore.

Another very solid four tracker by Funckarma's Roel Funcken, continuing solo to lay some heavy, gritty and smoky tunes in the vein of the duo's "Dubstoned" series. "Fes Bace" kicks off with a remix of an original from Julien Mier's Eat Concrete EP, before slowing things down a bit and ending with the excellent and massive title track. As usual, this is sort of dubstep, sort of IDM, very well produced and just very heavy. Recommended.

Do you already own all of the Converter's discography, and does it sit close to Winterk?lte's, Synapscape's, Mono No Aware's or Asche's on your shelves? Then, on the one hand, you already know how this debut album by Sabes sounds like. But if you're the kind of person who listens to all the acts above, you will enjoy "Diesel Charm" and its bulldozer rhythmic noise. From start to finish, this album is a collection of club-oriented distorted beats, straight and pounding. Absolutely nothing new under the disco ball, but there seems like there are still quite some fans of this sound.

Nice little split two tracker between what I believe are three newcomers from Russia. OK's "Sorrow" is a mid-tempo, quite heavy hard dubstep tune with a nice, dark build up, and something which can work well early in a set. On the digital flip side, Incept & Kexx's tune is a bit more classic, sticking to the cannons of "filth". Still, not bad at all.

Llamatron is allegedly calling his brand of heavy dubstep "warstep", and though the whole EP is not that hard from start to finish, it's true that you could definitely picture of an army of Transformers marching in order to the title track or the semi-metal mash-up of "Slay Her". Staccato beats, gritty lines, and quite some distortion thrown into the mix: just add a fast d'n'b remix by Contrage and a more melodic tune to close it all, and you get something which definitely has some potential on hardcore, hard dubstep parties.

A first, this new release on Drawn seems a lot more classically structured and wobble-oriented than its predecessor. But a second dive into Gyu's "Cerebral" reveals that this EP is a lot richer than its apparent simplicity might lead to believe. At times reminiscent of DMZ's sparse but heavy tracks, at times close to Phaeleh's smooth and spacious tunes, "Cerebral" is something which might not push back the boundaries of dubstep, but presents a charming and attitude-free take on the genre, for a very pleasant result.

Closer to Motbhboy's array into straight, deep beat techno than to Kloudbreak's electronic songs, the third release on Bristol's Kloudbreak is a groovy but still rather pumping combination of dancefloor tech, garage-y grooves and a somewhat post-dubstep atmosphere. Nice at home and on headphones, but quite obviously aimed at the club, this is another relatively low-key but very pleasant release from this nice label.

Frank Riggio's to the "Texturtion / Distosolista" is a slightly less sci-fi, but somewhat more emotional and evocative album, which fits its cover artwork very well. Naive and soundtrack-oriented at times, often glitchy and complex, it is a very carefully crafted whole. Potentially the fruit of long listening sessions to Amon Tobin's "Isam" and Hecq's "Steeltongued", it is highly dynamic and subtle, though all in all calm and charming. A very solid and recommended work.

It's quite hard to believe at first that the singer on this absurdly illustrated, "hardcore" bearing album on Murder Channel is Kiki Hitomi, much better known for being part of King Midas Sound together with Kevin Martins (The Bug, Techno Animal). And yet, the more you listen to this "cherry bon bon", the more you get used to the idea that no, this is not tongue-in-cheek fast breakcore, but a weird (as in Murder Channel-weird) combination of downtempo beats, dub melodies, semi pop, semi crazy singing, the whole thing quite colorful but surprisingly coherent and catchy. This is quite the unidentified audio object that this Japanese duo came up with, something we're somewhat getting used to from this label.

Monstrous value pack from Section8, with no less than 37 tracks (for a running time of more than three and a half hours) featured on this compilation. The whole thing is prominantly a hard drum'n'bass affair, with some heavy dubstep, a little bit of techno and a slight dose of hardcore. And as usual with Section8, besides a few well known acts (Current Value first and foremost, with his "Shy Flame" tune again), most artists presented here are newcomers or younger musicians. In the end, there're quite some nice tracks in the lot, though the quality varies very understandably considering how much material is presented here. Quite the long, wild ride.

In all its schizophrenia, Acrnym's long awaited return is much harder and a lot more open-minded than this musician's older releases on Sublight and Death$ucker (which were somewhat more Venetian Snares and Warp influenced). Kicking off with a metal mashup, switching to a more hardcore and rather dark tune before closing with two Wrong-music, anything goes party breakcore, "Handy Drawer" is a kind of old-school-but-good-school breakcore EP that should have no difficulty in having people bounce and thrash around.

Really nice, varied and rather highly awaited new two tracker from Limewax, with a hard-hitting but surprisingly melodic track on the A side and a more hardcore tune full of compressed beats and staccato rhythms on the B one. Considering who this comes from, you can expect quality, and that's just what you get. High dancefloor potential here, of course.
